Work in batches you can lay out cleanly. Twenty well-spaced cards beat forty crammed edge to edge. If a card looks cramped in the preview, move it before you shoot, not after.
Even, indirect light and a dark plain background. Bright diffuse daylight near a window works well. The enemies are glare and shadow, because both hide text from the camera. Tilt the phone slightly if you see a reflection, and keep your own shadow out of the frame.
The background does more than you would expect. A dark, matte surface makes the pale edge of each white card stand out. That contrast is what helps the AI separate one card from the next during segmentation. A busy tablecloth or a glass table does the opposite and confuses the boundaries.
Some cards resist reading no matter how well you shoot them. This is a hard limitation, and it is worth naming instead of pretending otherwise. Foil-printed and metallic cards reflect light and lose whole fields. Glossy cards under direct light do the same. Very low-contrast designs, like grey text on a white card, give the reader little to grip.
Handwritten notes are not reliably extracted, so a phone number scrawled on the back may not come through. Heavily stylized layouts and vertical or foreign-language cards also drop in accuracy. When a card matters and reads poorly, check that one field by hand. The scan still saves you almost all of the typing.
Most failed bulk scans come from a few repeatable errors, not from the software. Fix these and the read rate jumps.

Use a dark, plain, matte surface such as a wooden desk or dark cloth. It makes the pale edges of each white card stand out, which helps the AI separate one card from the next. Avoid patterned tablecloths, glass, and anything reflective under the cards.
You photograph one face at a time, so lay every card the same way up with the printed contact side showing. If the back holds a note or a second language you need, capture it in a separate shot. The reverse side rarely holds the details that matter for follow-up.
